Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Dough scraper
  • Weighing scales
  • Sieve
  • Baking Tray
  • Kettle
  • Measuring Jug
  • Spoon
  • Clingfilm
  • Pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 225 g Plain flour
  • ½ packet dried yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 30 g cheddar cheese optional
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 200 ml warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for brushing

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven 190°c
  • Sprinkle flour onto your baking tray. This will help the bread from sticking.
  • Weigh out your ingredients.
  • Boil the water in your kettle. Allow to cool.
  • Measure water into jug. Dissolve honey and yeast in water.
  • Sift the flour into your bowl.
  • Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in yeast mixture.
  • Combine the mixture into a dough, turn out onto the surface.
Tip: sprinkle flour onto the bench first to stop the bread from sticking.
  • Knead the dough until it becomes elastic/smooth.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl and cover. Leave to prove for 1 -2 hours.
Tip: In class there wont be enough time for this step, so don't worry and move onto the next step.
  • Weigh your dough. Divide your dough into 6 equal pieces.
Tip: you can use a calcuator for this step, but I recommend asking Siri -as your hands will be covered in flour and dough.
  • Shape into balls first, then roll into long sticks. Work from the centre out.
  • Place them spaced apart on the baking tray. Brush with olive oil.
  • Sprinkle cheese on top OR you can add sea salt and cracked black pepper.
  • Bake in the centre of the oven for 15-20 mins or until golden brown.
